Biorepository

A Biorepository (pronounced: bio-re-pos-i-tory) is a biological materials repository that collects, processes, stores, and distributes biospecimens to support future scientific investigation.

Etymology

The term "Biorepository" is derived from the combination of two words: "bio", a prefix derived from the Greek word "bios" meaning "life", and "repository", which originates from the Latin word "repositorium" meaning "a place where things are stored".

Definition

A Biorepository is a facility or a place that collects, catalogs, and stores samples of biological material. These samples could include blood, saliva, plasma, and purified DNA. These samples are then used in research intended to improve our understanding of complex diseases and discover new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat them.
