Biomimetics

Biomimetics (pronounced: bio-mim-etics, from the Greek words bios, life, and mimesis, imitation) is a field of study that seeks to emulate nature's models, systems, processes, and elements to solve complex human problems.

Etymology

The term "Biomimetics" was coined by the American biophysicist and polymath Otto Schmitt in the 1950s. The word is derived from the Greek words bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning imitation.

Definition

Biomimetics is the interdisciplinary study of the structures and functions of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of materials and machines. It is often referred to as Bionics, Biognosis, Biomimicry, or Biomimetical Engineering.

Related Terms

  • Bionics: This term is often used interchangeably with biomimetics and refers to the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology.
  • Biognosis: It is the process of understanding life and nature, which is a fundamental aspect of biomimetics.
  • Biomimicry: This is another term often used interchangeably with biomimetics. It is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature's time-tested patterns and strategies.
  • Biomimetical Engineering: This is the process of developing and testing mechanical systems that mimic biological processes.

Applications

Biomimetics has applications in various fields such as Robotics, Medicine, Nanotechnology, Architecture, and Material Science. For example, in medicine, biomimetics is used to develop better drug delivery systems. In architecture, it is used to design buildings that mimic the efficiency of natural structures.
