Belle Harbor is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the western half of the Rockaway Peninsula, which is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Jamaica Bay to the north. Belle Harbor is part of Queens Community Board 14.

History

Belle Harbor was developed in the early 20th century as a residential community. The area was originally part of the Rockaway Beach area, which was a popular summer destination for New Yorkers. The neighborhood was named "Belle Harbor" to evoke the beauty of the seaside location.

Geography

Belle Harbor is situated between the neighborhoods of Neponsit to the west and Rockaway Park to the east. The main thoroughfare in Belle Harbor is Beach Channel Drive, which runs parallel to the coastline. The neighborhood is known for its beautiful beaches and scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Demographics

Belle Harbor is predominantly a residential area with a mix of single-family homes and small apartment buildings. The population is diverse, with a significant number of long-term residents and families. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community and is known for its active civic associations.

Education

Belle Harbor is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood has several public and private schools, including P.S. 114 Belle Harbor School and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.

Transportation

Belle Harbor is accessible by several modes of transportation. The New York City Subway's IND Rockaway Line serves the nearby Rockaway Park – Beach 116th Street station. The neighborhood is also served by multiple MTA bus routes, including the Q22 and Q35.

Notable Events

Belle Harbor was significantly affected by the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 on November 12, 2001. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 260 people on board and five people on the ground. The community came together in the aftermath of the tragedy to support the victims' families and each other.
