Belizean Americans

Belizean Americans are Americans who are of Belizean ancestry. Belizean Americans are a part of the larger Caribbean American community in the United States. They have a rich cultural heritage that reflects the diverse ethnic composition of Belize, including Mestizo, Creole, Maya, Garifuna, and other ethnic groups.

History

The migration of Belizeans to the United States began in the early 20th century, with significant increases during the 1960s and 1970s. Many Belizeans moved to the U.S. in search of better economic opportunities and to escape political instability. The largest wave of migration occurred after Hurricane Hattie in 1961, which devastated much of Belize.

English is the official language of Belize, and most Belizean Americans are fluent in English. However, many also speak Kriol, a creole language that is widely spoken in Belize.
