Beer in Kenya

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Beer in Kenya refers to the brewing and consumption of beer in the East African country of Kenya. The beer industry in Kenya is primarily dominated by two major companies, East African Breweries and Keroche Breweries, although there are a number of smaller craft breweries that have emerged in recent years.

History

The history of beer in Kenya dates back to pre-colonial times, with traditional African beers such as busaa and chang'aa being brewed by various ethnic groups. The modern beer industry in Kenya, however, began in the early 20th century with the establishment of the first commercial brewery, Kenya Breweries Ltd, in 1922.

Major Breweries

East African Breweries

East African Breweries (EABL), also known as Kenya Breweries Ltd, is the largest beer producer in Kenya. The company, which is a subsidiary of Diageo, produces a variety of beers including Tusker, White Cap, and Pilsner.

Keroche Breweries

Keroche Breweries is the second largest beer producer in Kenya. The company was established in 1997 and produces a variety of beers including Summit Lager and Viena Ice.

Craft Breweries

In recent years, a number of craft breweries have emerged in Kenya. These include Big Five Breweries, which operates the Brew Bistro and Lounge in Nairobi, and Sierra Premium Beers, which produces a range of craft beers using locally sourced ingredients.

Beer Culture

Beer is a popular beverage in Kenya, with lagers being the most commonly consumed style of beer. Traditional African beers such as busaa and chang'aa are also consumed, particularly in rural areas.
