Bay (Template:Lang-so) is an administrative region (gobol) in southern Somalia. It is bordered by the regions of Bakool to the north, Lower Shabelle to the south, Middle Juba to the southeast, and Gedo to the west. The capital of Bay is Baidoa, which is one of the largest cities in Somalia.
Geography[edit]
Bay is characterized by its semi-arid climate, with a landscape that includes both flat plains and some hilly areas. The region is part of the larger Somali Plateau, which extends across much of the Horn of Africa. The Shabelle River, one of the two major rivers in Somalia, flows through the southern part of the region, providing a vital water source for agriculture and livestock.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Bay is predominantly based on agriculture and livestock. The fertile lands around the Shabelle River support the cultivation of crops such as sorghum, maize, and beans. Livestock rearing, including cattle, goats, and camels, is also a significant economic activity, providing livelihoods for many of the region's inhabitants.
History[edit]
Bay has a rich history that is intertwined with the broader history of Somalia. The region has been inhabited for centuries by various Somali clans, and it has been a center of trade and commerce due to its strategic location. During the colonial period, Bay was part of Italian Somaliland. After Somalia gained independence in 1960, Bay became one of the country's administrative regions.
In recent decades, Bay has experienced significant challenges due to political instability and conflict. The region has been affected by the Somali Civil War, which began in the early 1990s, leading to disruptions in governance and infrastructure.
Demographics[edit]
The population of Bay is predominantly Somali, with various clans and sub-clans residing in the region. The main language spoken is Somali, and Islam is the predominant religion.
Education and Health[edit]
Education and healthcare services in Bay have been impacted by the ongoing conflict and instability. However, efforts are being made to improve access to education and health facilities. Several schools and health centers have been established in Baidoa and other towns in the region.
