Basil Hayden's is a brand of bourbon whiskey produced by Beam Suntory, a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan. It is part of the company's small batch collection, which also includes Knob Creek, Booker's, and Baker's. Basil Hayden's is known for its high-rye content and smooth flavor profile.

History

Basil Hayden's was first introduced in 1992 by Booker Noe, the grandson of Jim Beam. The brand is named after Basil Hayden Sr., a distiller who is said to have used a high-rye mash bill in his bourbon. Hayden Sr. is also known for leading a group of Catholic families from Maryland to Kentucky in the late 18th century, where he began distilling.

Production

Basil Hayden's is made using a mash bill that includes a higher percentage of rye compared to other bourbons. This gives it a spicier flavor profile. The whiskey is aged for around 8 years in new, charred American oak barrels. The aging process and the high-rye content contribute to its distinctive taste.

Flavor Profile

Basil Hayden's is noted for its light body and gentle bite. The flavor profile includes notes of pepper, honey, and a hint of mint. It is often described as having a balanced and smooth finish, making it a popular choice for both sipping and mixing in cocktails.

Variants

In addition to the original Basil Hayden's, the brand has released several variants, including:

  • Basil Hayden's Dark Rye
  • Basil Hayden's Two by Two Rye
  • Basil Hayden's 10 Year Old Bourbon

Awards

Basil Hayden's has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. It is frequently praised for its unique flavor profile and high quality.
