Balanitis (pronounced: /ˌbaləˈnīdəs/) is a medical condition that involves inflammation of the glans penis, the head of the penis, due to an infection or other reasons.

Etymology

The term "Balanitis" comes from the Greek word "balanos," meaning acorn, and the suffix "-itis," which is used in medical terminology to denote inflammation.

Causes

Balanitis can be caused by several factors, including poor hygiene, excessive washing, or not fully rinsing soap off the penis. It can also be caused by an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, or an allergic reaction to certain chemicals in soaps or detergents. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or phimosis, can also increase the risk of developing balanitis.

Symptoms

Symptoms of balanitis may include redness, swelling, itching, rash, pain, and a foul-smelling discharge. In some cases, it may also cause painful urination or difficulty retracting the foreskin.

Treatment

Treatment for balanitis typically involves keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding substances that can irritate the skin, and using topical antifungal or antibiotic creams. In severe cases, circumcision may be recommended.

Related Terms

  • Phimosis: A condition where the foreskin cannot be fully retracted over the head of the penis.
  • Posthitis: Inflammation of the foreskin.
  • Balanoposthitis: Inflammation of both the glans penis and the foreskin.
