Baidu
Baidu is a Chinese multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products, and artificial intelligence (AI). It is one of the largest AI and internet companies in the world. The company was founded by Robin Li and Eric Xu in 2000.
History
Baidu was established in 2000 by co-founders Robin Li and Eric Xu. Both of the co-founders are Chinese nationals who studied and worked overseas before returning to China. In October 2001, Baidu launched a news search engine and picture search engine, adopting a unique identification technology capable of identifying and grouping the information.
Services
Baidu offers several services to its users, including a Chinese search engine for websites, audio files, and images. Baidu offers 57 search and community services, such as Baidu Baike, an online collaboratively built encyclopedia, and a searchable keyword-based discussion forum.
Baidu AI
Baidu has invested in the development of artificial intelligence since its inception. The company's AI platform, Baidu Brain, offers 230+ AI capabilities, including facial recognition, natural language processing, and autonomous driving. Baidu also operates the Apollo Project, an open-source software platform that aims to promote and advance autonomous vehicle technology.
Criticism and Controversy
Baidu has faced criticism and controversy for its business practices, including its search engine's censorship of information and the promotion of misleading medical information. In 2016, the company faced significant backlash following the death of a student who had relied on Baidu's paid listings for medical treatment.
