The Bachelor of Arts (BA, B.A., AB, or A.B., from the Latin artium baccalaureus or baccalaureus artium) is a bachelor's degree awarded for an undergraduate program in the liberal arts, the sciences, or both.

Etymology
The term "Bachelor of Arts" is derived from the Latin baccalaureus, from bacca laurea, "laurel berry", referring to the laurel wreath given in ancient times to scholars upon their graduation. "Arts" refers to the liberal arts, derived from the Latin artes liberales, meaning "liberal arts", which are those subjects or skills that in classical antiquity were considered essential for a free person to know in order to take an active part in civic life.
