Astasis

Astasis (pronounced as-ta-sis, from the Greek a meaning "not" and stasis meaning "standing") is a rare neurological condition characterized by the inability to maintain a stable or upright position. It is often associated with neurological disorders and balance disorders.

Definition

Astasis is a condition where the patient has difficulty maintaining a stable or upright position. This is not due to weakness or ataxia, but rather a lack of motor coordination. Patients with astasis may have normal strength and reflexes, but they struggle to maintain balance when standing or walking.

Symptoms

The primary symptom of astasis is an inability to maintain an upright position. This can manifest as difficulty standing or walking without support. Other symptoms may include tremors, dizziness, and a feeling of instability.

Causes

Astasis can be caused by a variety of conditions, most commonly neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and stroke. It can also be a side effect of certain medications, particularly those used to treat seizures and psychiatric disorders.

Treatment

Treatment for astasis focuses on managing the underlying condition causing the symptoms. This may involve medication, physical therapy, or in some cases, surgery. Assistive devices such as canes or walkers may also be helpful.

Related Terms

  • Ataxia: A lack of muscle coordination which may affect speech, eye movements, the ability to swallow, walking, picking up objects, and other voluntary movements.
  • Dystasia: Difficulty in standing due to muscular or nervous system dysfunction.
  • Proprioception: The sense of the relative position of one's own parts of the body and strength of effort being employed in movement.
