Artie Shaw (born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky; May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004) was an American clarinetist, composer, and bandleader in the jazz genre. Known for his innovative approach to music, Shaw was one of the leading figures in the swing era, alongside other luminaries such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. His career spanned over several decades, during which he produced numerous hits, including his 1938 rendition of "Begin the Beguine".

Early Life

Artie Shaw was born in New York City to Jewish immigrants from Russia and Austria. He grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where he learned to play the saxophone and clarinet. Shaw left home at 16 to pursue a career in music, touring with various bands before forming his own.

Career

Shaw's breakthrough came in 1938 with his swing rendition of "Begin the Beguine". His band became one of the most popular of the era, rivaling even Benny Goodman's in popularity. Shaw was known for his perfectionism and innovative arrangements. He was one of the first bandleaders to integrate his bands, hiring African American musicians such as Billie Holiday as a vocalist in 1938.

Throughout his career, Shaw would disband and reform his orchestra several times, exploring various musical styles including classical and bebop. He enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, leading a band that served in the Pacific.

After the war, Shaw continued to perform but became increasingly disillusioned with the music industry. He officially retired from performing in 1954, although he would occasionally return for specific projects.

Personal Life

Shaw was known for his complex personal life, having been married eight times, including to actresses Ava Gardner and Lana Turner. He was also a noted author, writing both fiction and non-fiction.

Legacy

Artie Shaw is remembered as one of the greatest clarinetists in jazz history. His recordings continue to be popular, and his innovative approach to music has influenced countless musicians. Shaw was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987.
