Antananarivo, often referred to by its colonial name, Tananarive, is the capital city and largest urban area of Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean. History

The French colonization in 1897 transformed the city significantly, introducing new architectural styles and modern infrastructure. Madagascar regained its independence in 1960, with Antananarivo as its capital. Geography

Antananarivo is located in the central part of Madagascar, at an average elevation of 1,280 meters (4,199 feet). The city is built on the slopes of a ridgeline that extends north and south, which provides it with its characteristic topography of steep streets and staircases. The climate is temperate, with a warm rainy season and a cool dry season, typical of the highlands.
