Angular sea-fig (Carpobrotus acinaciformis), also known as Sour fig or Hottentot fig, is a species of flowering plant in the family Aizoaceae. It is native to South Africa but has become naturalized in many other parts of the world.

Etymology

The term "Angular sea-fig" is derived from the plant's angular leaves and its proximity to the sea. The genus name Carpobrotus comes from the Greek words karpos meaning "fruit" and brota meaning "edible". The species name acinaciformis is derived from the Latin words acinaces meaning "scimitar" or "short sword" and forma meaning "shape", referring to the shape of the plant's leaves.

Description

Angular sea-fig is a creeping, mat-forming succulent species and a member of the Ice plant family. It has angular, fleshy leaves and large, daisy-like flowers that are typically bright magenta, but can also be yellow or white. The fruit is an edible fig-like structure.
