Early Life and Education

Sir Andrew Philip Witty was born on 22 August 1964 in Cheshire, England. He attended Malbank School and Sixth Form College in Nantwich. Witty went on to study at the University of Nottingham, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.

Career

GlaxoSmithKline

Andrew Witty joined GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) in 1985. Over the years, he held various positions within the company, including roles in the UK, South Africa, and the United States. In 2008, Witty was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of GSK, a position he held until 2017. During his tenure, he focused on expanding the company's presence in emerging markets and increasing access to medicines.

UnitedHealth Group

In 2018, Witty joined UnitedHealth Group as the CEO of Optum, a health services and innovation company. He was later appointed as the President of UnitedHealth Group in 2019. In 2021, Witty became the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, succeeding David S. Wichmann.

Honors and Recognition

Andrew Witty was knighted in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to the economy and the UK pharmaceutical industry. He has been recognized for his contributions to global health and his efforts to improve access to medicines in developing countries.

Personal Life

Witty is married and has two children. He is known for his interest in global health issues and has been involved in various initiatives to improve healthcare access worldwide.
