Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo
Dominican Republic physician and women's rights advocate
Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo (1879–1947) was a pioneering physician and women's rights advocate from the Dominican Republic. She is recognized as the first woman to practice medicine in the country and was a prominent figure in the fight for women's rights and social reform.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo was born in San Rafael del Yuma, a small town in the Dominican Republic, in 1879. From a young age, she demonstrated a keen interest in learning and a strong desire to help others. Her family supported her educational pursuits, which was uncommon for women at the time.
Rodríguez Perozo attended primary school in her hometown before moving to Santo Domingo to continue her education. She was one of the few women of her era to pursue higher education, enrolling in the University of Santo Domingo to study medicine. Despite facing significant gender-based discrimination, she persevered and graduated with a medical degree in 1909.
Medical Career[edit]

After completing her studies, Rodríguez Perozo returned to her hometown to practice medicine. She was the first woman to do so in the Dominican Republic, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for future generations of female doctors. Her practice focused on providing care to underserved populations, particularly women and children.
Rodríguez Perozo was known for her dedication to her patients and her commitment to improving public health. She advocated for better sanitation, nutrition, and access to medical care, often providing services free of charge to those who could not afford them.
Advocacy and Social Reform[edit]
In addition to her medical work, Rodríguez Perozo was a vocal advocate for women's rights and social reform. She believed that education and healthcare were fundamental rights and worked tirelessly to promote these causes.
She was involved in various organizations that aimed to improve the status of women in the Dominican Republic. Rodríguez Perozo campaigned for women's suffrage and was a member of several feminist groups that sought to address issues such as domestic violence and gender inequality.
Legacy[edit]
Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez Perozo's contributions to medicine and women's rights have left a lasting impact on the Dominican Republic. She is remembered as a trailblazer who challenged societal norms and fought for the rights of the marginalized.
Her legacy continues to inspire new generations of women in medicine and activism. In recognition of her achievements, several institutions and awards in the Dominican Republic bear her name, celebrating her life and work.
