Amlodipine Besylate

Amlodipine besylate (pronounced am-LOE-di-peen BES-i-late) is a medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). It is a type of drug known as a calcium channel blocker.

Etymology

The term "Amlodipine" is derived from the components "am" (referring to amines, a group of organic compounds), "lo" (likely a random assignment), and "dipine" (indicating its classification as a dihydropyridine calcium antagonist). "Besylate" refers to the besylate salt form of the drug, which enhances its solubility and absorption.

Usage

Amlodipine besylate works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels. It is used alone or together with other medicines to lower hypertension and to treat angina. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Related Terms

  • Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, it is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated.
  • Angina: A type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.
  • Calcium Channel Blocker: A type of medication that disrupts the movement of calcium through calcium channels, which are present in the muscle cells of the heart and the smooth muscle of the vascular system.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Amlodipine besylate include headache, swelling of the ankles or feet (edema), fatigue, nausea, and flushing. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Precautions

Before taking Amlodipine besylate, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (such as nisoldipine, nifedipine); or if you have any other allergies.
