American Society of Addiction Medicine[edit]
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is a professional society representing physicians and associated professionals dedicated to the treatment and prevention of addiction. Founded in 1954, ASAM is committed to increasing access to and improving the quality of addiction medicine.
History[edit]
ASAM was originally established as the American Medical Society on Alcoholism (AMSA) in 1954. The organization expanded its focus to include all substance use disorders and was renamed the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 1989. Over the years, ASAM has grown to become a leading authority in the field of addiction medicine.

- Supporting research and prevention efforts
- Promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addiction
Membership[edit]
ASAM's membership includes over 6,000 physicians and associated professionals. Members are involved in a variety of fields, including psychiatry, internal medicine, family medicine, and emergency medicine. Membership is open to physicians and other healthcare professionals who are committed to the field of addiction medicine.
Education and Certification[edit]

ASAM also supports the certification of physicians in addiction medicine through the ABPM.
