The American Film Institute (AFI) is a nonprofit organization in the United States that educates filmmakers and honors the heritage of the motion picture arts. Established in 1967, AFI provides leadership in screen education and the recognition and celebration of excellence in the art of film, television, and digital media.

History

The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 by a mandate from President Lyndon B. Johnson to establish a national arts organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of American film heritage. The AFI was created to train filmmakers and preserve America's film heritage. The initial funding came from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Motion Picture Association of America, and the Ford Foundation.
