History
The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 by a mandate from President Lyndon B. Johnson to establish a national arts organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of American film heritage. The AFI was created to train filmmakers and preserve America's film heritage. The initial funding came from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Motion Picture Association of America, and the Ford Foundation.
