American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society (ACS). Established in 2001, ACS CAN is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by advocating for public policies that reduce cancer risk, increase access to care, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors.

Mission and Goals

ACS CAN's mission is to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health issue. The organization focuses on:

  • Increasing funding for cancer research and prevention programs.
  • Ensuring access to affordable, quality health care for all individuals, particularly those affected by cancer.
  • Reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Improving the quality of life for cancer patients and survivors.

Advocacy and Policy Initiatives

ACS CAN engages in a variety of advocacy efforts at the local, state, and federal levels. Key initiatives include:

  • Cancer Research Funding: Advocating for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to support cancer research.
  • Access to Care: Supporting policies that expand access to Medicaid and Medicare, and advocating for the protection of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Tobacco Control: Promoting comprehensive tobacco control policies, including higher tobacco taxes, smoke-free laws, and funding for tobacco cessation programs.
  • Patient Quality of Life: Supporting legislation that improves palliative care and pain management for cancer patients.

Organizational Structure

ACS CAN operates through a network of volunteers and staff across the United States. The organization is governed by a board of directors and works closely with the American Cancer Society to align its advocacy efforts with the Society's mission.

Public Engagement

ACS CAN engages the public through grassroots advocacy campaigns, encouraging individuals to participate in "lobby days," sign petitions, and contact their elected officials about cancer-related issues. The organization also provides resources and training for advocates to effectively communicate with policymakers.
