American Ambulance

American Ambulance (pronunciation: /əˈmɛrɪkən æmˈbuləns/) is a term used to refer to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) vehicles in the United States. These vehicles are specifically designed and equipped to provide medical care during transportation to a medical facility.

Etymology

The term "ambulance" comes from the Latin word ambulare, meaning "to walk or move about" which is a reference to early medical care where patients were moved by lifting or wheeling. The term "American" is added to specify the context to the United States.

History

The concept of the ambulance has a long history in the United States, dating back to the Civil War when Dr. Jonathan Letterman, Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac, established a system of mobile field hospitals accompanied by a corps of ambulances. Modern American ambulances are typically powered by gasoline or diesel fuel and are equipped with a variety of medical equipment and supplies.
