Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin was an American chemist and pharmacologist known for his work in the field of psychedelic drugs. He is often referred to as the "godfather of psychedelics" for his role in popularizing the use of MDMA and other psychoactive compounds.

Early Life and Education

Alexander Shulgin was born on June 17, 1925, in Berkeley, California. He showed an early interest in chemistry and went on to study at Harvard University, where he earned a degree in organic chemistry.

Career

After completing his education, Shulgin worked for Dow Chemical Company, where he developed the first biodegradable pesticide, Zectran. His success at Dow allowed him to pursue his interest in psychoactive substances.

Psychedelic Research

Shulgin is best known for his synthesis and personal bioassay of hundreds of psychoactive compounds, including MDMA, which he introduced to psychotherapists in the 1970s. He documented his work in the books PiHKAL (Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved) and TiHKAL (Tryptamines I Have Known And Loved), co-authored with his wife, Ann Shulgin.

Personal Life

Shulgin was married to Ann Shulgin, with whom he collaborated on many of his projects. Together, they explored the effects of various psychoactive substances and contributed significantly to the field of psychopharmacology.

Legacy

Alexander Shulgin's work has had a lasting impact on the study of psychedelics and their potential therapeutic uses. His books continue to be influential among researchers and enthusiasts of psychoactive substances.
