Alessandro Achillini (pronounced: ah-les-sahn-dro ah-kee-lee-nee) was an Italian philosopher and anatomist, born in Bologna on October 29, 1463, and died in the same city on August 2, 1512. He was a prominent figure in the field of anatomy during the Renaissance period.

Etymology

The name Alessandro is of Italian origin and means "defender of mankind". Achillini is a surname of Italian origin, but its etymology is not well known.

Biography

Alessandro Achillini studied under the guidance of his uncle, Giovanni Filoteo Achillini. He was a professor of philosophy and medicine at the University of Bologna and the University of Padua. His contributions to the field of anatomy were significant, and he is known for his detailed descriptions of the human body.

Achillini's most notable contribution to medicine was his work on the human skeletal system. He was the first to describe the two bones of the lower leg, the tibia and fibula, and the small bones of the wrist, known as the carpal bones.
