Alcon

Alcon (pronounced: al-kon) is a global medical company specializing in eye care products. The company was founded in 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas, United States. Alcon's product portfolio includes surgical equipment and devices, contact lenses, eye drops, and other vision care products.

Etymology

The name "Alcon" is derived from the combination of the founders' names, Robert Alexander and William Conner. They combined the first two letters of their last names to form "Alcon".

History

Alcon was initially a small pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas. The company expanded its operations over the years and became a global leader in eye care. In 1977, Alcon was acquired by Nestlé, the Swiss multinational food and drink processing conglomerate corporation. In 2010, Nestlé sold a majority share of Alcon to Novartis, a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company. In 2019, Alcon became an independent company after being spun off from Novartis.
