Alcoholic Drinks in Sweden

The consumption and production of Alcoholic drinks in Sweden have a rich history and are deeply ingrained in the Swedish culture. The most popular alcoholic beverages in Sweden include beer, wine, and spirits, with a special emphasis on the traditional Swedish spirit known as Snaps.

History

The history of alcoholic drinks in Sweden dates back to the Viking Age, when mead, a fermented drink made from honey, was the beverage of choice. The production and consumption of beer became widespread during the Middle Ages. The 19th century saw the introduction of brännvin, a type of Swedish vodka, which later evolved into the modern-day snaps.

Beer

Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in Sweden. The country has a thriving craft beer scene, with numerous microbreweries producing a wide range of beer styles. The Swedish beer market is dominated by two major breweries, Spendrups and Systembolaget, the latter being a government-owned chain of liquor stores.

Wine

Despite the country's cold climate, wine production in Sweden has been growing steadily over the past few decades. The most common grape varieties grown in Sweden are Solaris and Rondo. Swedish wines are known for their unique character and high quality, often winning awards at international wine competitions.

Spirits

Spirits are also popular in Sweden, with snaps being the most traditional one. Snaps is a type of distilled beverage often flavored with herbs and spices. It is typically consumed during festive occasions, especially during the traditional Swedish smörgåsbord.

Alcohol Laws

The sale and consumption of alcohol in Sweden are regulated by strict laws. The minimum legal drinking age is 18 for bars and restaurants and 20 for purchasing alcohol in Systembolaget stores. The government also imposes high taxes on alcoholic beverages to discourage excessive drinking.
