Sulfadimethoxine

Sulfadimethoxine is a long-lasting sulfonamide antimicrobial medication used in veterinary medicine. It is used to treat many infections, including respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections.

Pharmacology

Sulfadimethoxine inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid, which is essential for the growth and reproduction of bacteria. It is a competitive inhibitor of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is required by bacteria to synthesize folic acid.

Veterinary Use

In veterinary medicine, sulfadimethoxine is used to treat a variety of infections. It is commonly used in the treatment of coccidiosis, a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract. It is also used to treat fowl cholera, avian malaria, and infectious coryza in poultry.

Side Effects

Like other sulfonamides, sulfadimethoxine can cause a variety of side effects. These can include anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and hypersensitivity reactions. In rare cases, it can cause crystalluria, which can lead to kidney damage.

Regulatory Status

In the United States, sulfadimethoxine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in chickens, turkeys, and dogs. It is not approved for use in humans.
