Albany (/ˈɔːlbəni/ (About this soundlisten) AWL-bə-nee) is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat and largest city of Albany County. Albany is on the west bank of the Hudson River, 135 miles (220 km) north of New York City and 90 miles (140 km) south of Quebec City.

The name Albany is likely from a Norman place name, Alba, and its etymology is from the Latin word Alba, meaning "white". It was named in honor of the Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland.
