Charity air ambulance service in South East England

Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) is a dedicated helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) that provides rapid response and critical care to the counties of Kent, Surrey, and Sussex in South East England. The service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, delivering advanced pre-hospital care to patients in need.

History[edit]

The Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex was established in 1989, initially serving the county of Kent. Over the years, the service expanded to cover Surrey and Sussex, becoming a vital component of the emergency medical services in the region. The charity has continually evolved, adopting new technologies and medical practices to enhance its capabilities.

Operations[edit]

KSS operates two helicopters, an AgustaWestland AW169 and a MD Helicopters MD Explorer, both equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. The helicopters are staffed by a team of highly trained doctors and paramedics who provide critical care at the scene of an incident.

The service is based at Redhill Aerodrome in Surrey, which allows for rapid deployment across the three counties. The helicopters can reach any location within the service area in approximately 25 minutes, significantly reducing the time to treatment for critically ill or injured patients.

Funding[edit]

As a charity, Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex relies entirely on public donations and fundraising efforts to maintain its operations. The cost of running the service is approximately £15 million per year, covering expenses such as aircraft maintenance, medical equipment, and staff training.

Medical Capabilities[edit]

The medical team on board the KSS helicopters is capable of delivering advanced interventions that are typically only available in a hospital setting. These include blood transfusion, anaesthesia, and surgical procedures such as thoracostomy and cricothyrotomy. The ability to perform these procedures at the scene of an incident can be life-saving, particularly in cases of severe trauma.

Community Engagement[edit]

KSS is actively involved in community engagement and education, raising awareness about the importance of air ambulance services and promoting safety initiatives. The charity hosts events and provides educational resources to schools and community groups across the region.

Future Developments[edit]

The charity is committed to continuous improvement and innovation. Future plans include the integration of new medical technologies, expansion of night-time operations, and further development of its educational programs. KSS aims to remain at the forefront of pre-hospital emergency medicine, ensuring the highest standard of care for patients.
