Afro–Puerto Ricans
Afro–Puerto Ricans[edit]

Afro–Puerto Ricans are Puerto Ricans who are of African descent. The history of Afro–Puerto Ricans is deeply intertwined with the history of Puerto Rico itself, from the early days of Spanish colonization to the present day.
History[edit]
Early African Presence[edit]

The presence of Africans in Puerto Rico dates back to the early 16th century, when the Spanish Empire began to colonize the island. Africans were brought to Puerto Rico as slaves to work in the sugar plantations and other industries. The Royal Decree of Graces of 1789 allowed for the importation of more slaves to boost the economy.
Abolition of Slavery[edit]

Slavery was officially abolished in Puerto Rico on March 22, 1873. The abolition of slavery was a significant event in the history of Afro–Puerto Ricans, as it marked the beginning of a new era of freedom and opportunity.
Post-Abolition Era[edit]
After the abolition of slavery, many Afro–Puerto Ricans continued to work in agriculture as peons. The transition from slavery to freedom was challenging, as many former slaves faced economic hardships and social discrimination.

Cultural Contributions[edit]
Afro–Puerto Ricans have made significant contributions to the culture of Puerto Rico, particularly in the areas of music, dance, and cuisine. The bomba and plena are traditional musical genres that have African roots and are an integral part of Puerto Rican culture.
Political and Social Influence[edit]

Afro–Puerto Ricans have played important roles in the political and social development of Puerto Rico. Leaders such as Pedro Albizu Campos have been influential in the fight for Puerto Rican independence and civil rights.

Sports and Achievements[edit]
Afro–Puerto Ricans have excelled in various sports, representing Puerto Rico on the international stage. Juan Evangelista Venegas was the first Puerto Rican to win an Olympic medal, achieving this feat in boxing.
