Adam's Peak (Sinhala: සමනළ කන්ද, Samanala Kanda; Tamil: சிவனொளி பாதமலை, Sivanolipatha Malai) is a 2,243 meters (7,359 ft) tall conical mountain located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the "Sri Pada", a 1.8 meters (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit, which in Buddhist tradition is held to be the footprint of the Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Shiva, in Islamic tradition that of Adam, and in Christian tradition that of Saint Thomas.

History

The mountain has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,000 years. Its significance in various religious traditions has made it a focal point for visitors from around the world. According to Buddhist tradition, the footprint was made by the Buddha as he visited Sri Lanka. For Hindus, the footprint is said to belong to Shiva, while Muslims and Christians believe it to be Adam's and Saint Thomas's footprint, respectively.

Geography

Adam's Peak is part of the Sri Lanka's Central Highlands. The surrounding region is rich in biodiversity, including many species of flora and fauna that are endemic to the area. The mountain itself is covered in dense forest, and the ascent to the summit involves a steep staircase of over 5,000 steps. The peak is also known for its diverse climates, ranging from tropical rainforest at its base to temperate near the summit.

Pilgrimage

The pilgrimage season to Adam's Peak begins in December and ends in May. During this time, thousands of pilgrims climb to the summit at night, in order to witness the spectacular sunrise and the shadow of the peak cast on the clouds below. This pilgrimage is considered sacred in Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, making it a unique example of religious harmony.
