APR-1400

The APR-1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400) is a Generation III nuclear reactor designed by the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). It is an advanced pressurized water reactor (PWR) with a gross electrical output of 1400 megawatts. The APR-1400 is an evolution of the OPR-1000 design, incorporating enhanced safety features and improved efficiency.

The APR-1400 is designed to meet the latest international safety standards and incorporates several advanced safety features. These include a core catcher to contain the core in the event of a meltdown, a double containment structure to prevent the release of radioactive materials, and a passive safety system that can operate without external power.

Safety Systems

The reactor is equipped with multiple redundant safety systems, including:

  • Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS): This system provides cooling to the reactor core in the event of a loss of coolant accident (LOCA).
  • Containment Spray System (CSS): This system reduces pressure and temperature inside the containment building during an accident.
  • In-containment Refueling Water Storage Tank (IRWST): This tank provides a source of water for the ECCS and CSS.

Efficiency and Performance

The APR-1400 is designed for a 60-year operational life with a high capacity factor. It features advanced digital instrumentation and control systems, which enhance operational efficiency and reliability. The reactor also has a high thermal efficiency, contributing to its economic competitiveness.

Deployment

The APR-1400 has been deployed in several countries, with the first units constructed in South Korea. The Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates is the first international deployment of the APR-1400, marking a significant milestone in the global expansion of this reactor design.
