The AO Foundation (pronounced: /eɪ oʊ/; etymology: derived from the Latin Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen, meaning "Working Group for Bone Fusion Issues") is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and their sequelae through research, development, education, and quality assurance in the principles, practice, and result of fracture treatment.
History
The AO Foundation was established in 1958 in Switzerland by a group of Swiss surgeons including Maurice E. Müller, Robert Schneider, Hans Willenegger, Martin Allgöwer, and Walter Bandi. The foundation's initial focus was on the development and teaching of new techniques of internal fixation of fractures.
Activities
The AO Foundation conducts research and development in the field of orthopedics and traumatology. It also provides education and training for medical professionals in these fields. The foundation's activities are organized into four clinical divisions: AO Trauma, AO Spine, AO Craniomaxillofacial, and AO Veterinary.
AO Trauma
AO Trauma is the largest division of the AO Foundation. It focuses on the treatment of trauma and disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
AO Spine
AO Spine is a division of the AO Foundation that focuses on the treatment of spinal disorders.
AO Craniomaxillofacial
AO Craniomaxillofacial is a division of the AO Foundation that focuses on the treatment of disorders of the craniomaxillofacial skeleton, including the skull, face, and jaws.
AO Veterinary
AO Veterinary is a division of the AO Foundation that focuses on the treatment of veterinary orthopedic disorders.
