ANH - A form of food given in liquid form, including liquid foods, through a tube inserted into a vein, under the skin, or into the stomach or small intestine. ANH is given when a person is unable to eat or drink by mouth or has a disease or condition that affects their ability to absorb nutrients through the digestive system. In people who are near death, it does not help prolong life and is not usually given because it can cause serious problems such as infection, aspiration (breathing liquid or food into the lungs), diarrhea, and convulsions. Also known as artificial feeding and hydration
