ACDD or Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Decompression is a surgical procedure performed to alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots in the cervical spine or neck. This procedure is typically performed when non-surgical treatments have failed to relieve symptoms of conditions such as herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis.

Procedure

The ACDD procedure involves the removal of a disc or a portion of a disc from the cervical spine. The surgeon accesses the disc through a small incision in the front (anterior) of the neck. After the disc is removed, the space is often filled with a bone graft or an artificial disc to maintain the spine's alignment and stability. This procedure can also involve the removal of bone spurs or other structures that are pressing on the spinal cord or nerve roots.

Indications

ACDD is typically indicated for patients who have symptoms of nerve root or spinal cord compression in the cervical spine. These symptoms can include neck pain, arm pain, numbness or weakness in the arms or hands, and difficulty with balance or coordination. These symptoms are often caused by conditions such as a herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, ACDD carries some risks. These can include infection, bleeding, damage to the nerves or spinal cord, problems with the graft or artificial disc, and difficulty swallowing or speaking. However, the procedure is generally considered safe and effective for relieving symptoms of cervical spine compression.

Recovery

Recovery from ACDD can vary depending on the individual patient and the extent of the surgery. Generally, patients can expect to spend a few days in the hospital followed by several weeks of rest and rehabilitation at home. Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain strength and flexibility in the neck.
