7-Eleven was founded in 1927 as an ice house storefront in Dallas. Originally named Tote'm, the company was renamed in 1946 to reflect its extended hours of operation, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., which were unprecedented at the time.

7-Eleven operates, franchises, and licenses over 71,000 stores in 17 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Seven & I Holdings Co., Ltd., a Japanese diversified retail group.
