The 1892 Republican National Convention was held at the Exposition Building in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from June 7 to June 10, 1892. The convention nominated incumbent President Benjamin Harrison for a second term and Whitelaw Reid for Vice President.
Background[edit]
The 1892 convention was notable for being the first Republican National Convention held in Minneapolis. The city was chosen for its central location and its growing importance as a political and economic hub in the Midwest.
Presidential Nomination[edit]
President Benjamin Harrison faced significant opposition within his party, particularly from supporters of former President James G. Blaine. Despite this, Harrison secured the nomination on the first ballot, receiving 535.17 votes to Blaine's 182.83.
Balloting Results[edit]
| Candidate | Votes |
|---|---|
| Benjamin Harrison | 535.17 |
| James G. Blaine | 182.83 |
| William McKinley | 182 |
| Robert Todd Lincoln | 1 |
Vice Presidential Nomination[edit]
The vice-presidential nomination went to Whitelaw Reid, a prominent newspaper editor and diplomat from New York. Reid was chosen to balance the ticket geographically and to appeal to the reformist wing of the party.
Platform[edit]
The platform adopted at the convention endorsed the protective tariff, called for the maintenance of the gold standard, and supported civil service reform. It also included planks on immigration, veterans' pensions, and the regulation of trusts.
