Żubrówka

Żubrówka

Żubrówka, also known as Bison Grass Vodka, is a flavored vodka that originates from Poland. It is unique due to its characteristic flavor derived from the bison grass that grows in the Białowieża Forest, the last and largest remaining parts of the primeval forest that once covered much of Europe. The vodka's name, Żubrówka, comes from żubr, the Polish, Belarusian, and Ukrainian word for the European bison, which is a typical inhabitant of the Białowieża Forest.

History[edit]

The history of Żubrówka dates back to the 14th century. It was traditionally used for medicinal purposes before becoming popular as a recreational drink. The unique flavor of Żubrówka comes from the bison grass, which is harvested by hand during the summer months. After the harvest, the grass is dried and used to flavor the vodka. Each bottle of Żubrówka traditionally contains a blade of bison grass, which gives the vodka its distinctive yellowish color.

Production[edit]

The production process of Żubrówka involves several steps. First, the bison grass is harvested and dried. The dried grass is then used to create a bison grass extract, which is added to pure vodka. The vodka is then filtered and bottled. The entire process takes several weeks to ensure the optimal infusion of the bison grass flavor into the vodka.

Taste and Serving[edit]

Żubrówka has a unique taste that is slightly sweet with a hint of vanilla and almond. It is often served chilled, either straight or mixed with apple juice, a combination known in Poland as a "tatanka" or "szarlotka".

International Availability[edit]

While Żubrówka is widely available in Poland and other parts of Europe, its availability in other countries is limited due to the presence of coumarin, a natural substance found in bison grass that is banned as a food additive in some countries, including the United States. However, a version of Żubrówka that complies with international regulations, known as Żubrówka Biała, is available in these markets.
