Hyaluronidase deficiency is a rare genetic disorder characterized by an absence or reduction in the activity of the enzyme hyaluronidase. This enzyme is responsible for the breakdown of hyaluronic acid, a substance that helps to lubricate and cushion the joints and tissues in the body.
Symptoms[edit]
The symptoms of hyaluronidase deficiency can vary widely, but may include joint pain, skin lesions, and growth retardation. Some individuals may also experience hearing loss and vision problems.
Causes[edit]
Hyaluronidase deficiency is caused by mutations in the HYAL1 gene. This gene provides instructions for making the enzyme hyaluronidase. When this gene is mutated, the enzyme's activity can be reduced or absent, leading to a buildup of hyaluronic acid in the body.
Diagnosis[edit]
Diagnosis of hyaluronidase deficiency is typically made through a combination of clinical examination, genetic testing, and laboratory testing to measure the levels of hyaluronic acid in the body.
Treatment[edit]
There is currently no cure for hyaluronidase deficiency. Treatment is typically focused on managing the symptoms and may include pain management, physical therapy, and hearing aids or vision aids for those with hearing or vision problems.
