Epididymal Hypertension (EH), commonly referred to as "blue balls", is a condition experienced by some individuals with male genitalia, characterized by pain and discomfort in the testicles due to prolonged sexual arousal without ejaculation. The term "epididymal" refers to the epididymis, a tube at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm. "Hypertension" in this context refers to the increased blood pressure in the area, not to be confused with systemic hypertension, which is high blood pressure throughout the entire body.
Causes[edit]
Epididymal Hypertension occurs when there is prolonged sexual arousal without ejaculation, leading to a buildup of blood in the vessels of the testicles and surrounding areas. This can cause discomfort due to the pressure of the excess blood. The condition is not harmful and is only temporary.
Symptoms[edit]
The primary symptom of EH is aching or pain in the testicles that may be accompanied by a bluish hue, hence the colloquial term "blue balls". The discomfort is usually relieved by ejaculation or subsides on its own over time.
Diagnosis[edit]
Diagnosis of Epididymal Hypertension is primarily based on the patient's symptoms and medical history. Physical examination is typically normal, and no specific tests are required for diagnosis. It is important for healthcare providers to differentiate EH from other causes of testicular pain, such as testicular torsion or epididymitis, which require immediate medical attention.
Treatment[edit]
The most straightforward treatment for Epididymal Hypertension is ejaculation, either through masturbation or sexual intercourse, which relieves the pressure by allowing the blood to flow out of the testicles. If ejaculation is not an option, the discomfort can also be alleviated through over-the-counter pain relief, cold compresses, or taking a cold shower. The condition is self-limiting and symptoms typically resolve on their own.
Prevention[edit]
Preventing Epididymal Hypertension involves avoiding prolonged periods of sexual arousal without ejaculation. However, it is important to note that experiencing EH occasionally is not harmful and does not require medical intervention unless the discomfort is severe or persistent.
