National Institute of Mental Health

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a part of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIMH is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders, and its mission is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.
History[edit]
The NIMH was established in 1949, following the National Mental Health Act of 1946, which was signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The act was a response to the growing awareness of the need for mental health research and the treatment of mental illnesses.

The first director of NIMH was Robert H. Felix, who served from 1949 to 1964. Under his leadership, the institute focused on expanding research and training in mental health.
