Dean is a term commonly used in academia, religious institutions, and legal and medical professions. It refers to a high-ranking official who is in charge of a division, faculty, college, university, or congregation. The term is derived from the Latin decanus, meaning "chief of ten".

Academia[edit]

In academia, a Dean is a senior official who is often in charge of a specific department or division within a university or college. The responsibilities of a Dean in academia may include overseeing academic policies, managing faculty and staff, and ensuring the quality of education and research within their department or division. Some institutions may have multiple Deans, each responsible for a specific area such as the Dean of Students or the Dean of Admissions.

Religious Institutions[edit]

In religious institutions, a Dean is a senior official within a cathedral or collegiate church. The Dean is often responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the church, including the administration of the clergy and the maintenance of the church building. In some denominations, the Dean may also be responsible for leading worship services.

Legal and Medical Professions[edit]

In the legal profession, a Dean is often the head of a law school or a bar association. They are responsible for overseeing the education and training of law students, as well as the professional development of practicing lawyers.

In the medical profession, a Dean is typically the head of a medical school or a medical faculty within a university. They are responsible for overseeing the education and training of medical students, as well as the research and clinical practice within the school or faculty.
