Thai
Thailand, officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, is a country in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Myanmar to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the southeast, and Malaysia to the south. The country's maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, and Indonesia and India on the Andaman Sea to the southwest.
History[edit]
The history of Thailand is characterized by the interaction of indigenous cultures with influences from foreign powers such as India, China, and the civilizations of Southeast Asia. The Thai people migrated from southwestern China to mainland Southeast Asia over the centuries. The first Thai Kingdom, Sukhothai, was established in 1238. It was succeeded by the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the mid-14th century, which lasted until the late 18th century.
Geography[edit]
Thailand features a variety of landscapes, including the mountainous regions in the north, the central plains known as the Rice Bowl of Asia, and the tropical islands and long coastlines of the southern peninsula. The country's highest point is Doi Inthanon in the Chiang Mai Province.
Economy[edit]
Thailand's economy is heavily export-dependent, with exports accounting for more than two-thirds of its gross domestic product (GDP). Major exports include electronics, automotive parts, and agricultural products such as rice, rubber, and seafood. Thailand is also a popular tourist destination, known for its vibrant cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Culture[edit]
Thai culture is deeply influenced by Buddhism, particularly Theravada Buddhism, which is practiced by around 95% of the population. Important cultural icons include the temple architecture and the annual Songkran festival. Thai cuisine is renowned worldwide for its flavors and ingredients, including herbs, spices, and fresh produce.
Government and Politics[edit]
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with a system of government that has undergone several changes since the 20th century. The current monarch, King Vajiralongkorn, ascended the throne in 2016. The political scene in Thailand has been marked by instability, with numerous coups and changes in government.
Demographics[edit]
The population of Thailand is diverse, with ethnic Thais making up approximately 75% of the population. There are significant communities of Chinese, Malays, and other minority groups. The official language is Thai, and the primary religion is Buddhism.
