Ethyl acetoxy butanoate is a chemical compound that belongs to the class of organic compounds known as esters. These are compounds containing a carboxylic acid group in which the hydrogen of the hydroxyl group has been replaced by an alkyl or aryl group. Ethyl acetoxy butanoate is characterized by the presence of an ethyl group, an acetoxy group, and a butanoate group.

Chemical Structure[edit]

Ethyl acetoxy butanoate has a molecular formula of C8H14O4. It consists of an ethyl group (C2H5), an acetoxy group (CH3COO), and a butanoate group (C4H7O2). The ethyl group is attached to the acetoxy group, which is in turn attached to the butanoate group.

Properties[edit]

Ethyl acetoxy butanoate is a liquid at room temperature. It has a fruity, sweet, and slightly sour odor. It is soluble in water and most organic solvents. It has a boiling point of approximately 200 degrees Celsius and a melting point of approximately -50 degrees Celsius.

Uses[edit]

Ethyl acetoxy butanoate is primarily used in the flavor and fragrance industry. It is used as a flavoring agent in food and beverages, and as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes and cosmetics. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as a solvent and as a reagent in the synthesis of other chemical compounds.

Safety[edit]

Ethyl acetoxy butanoate is generally considered safe for use in food and cosmetics. However, it can cause irritation to the skin and eyes, and may be harmful if swallowed or inhaled in large amounts. It is recommended to handle this compound with care and to use appropriate personal protective equipment.
