Cub (supermarket)
Cub (supermarket)[edit]

Cub is a chain of supermarkets located primarily in the Midwestern United States, with a strong presence in Minnesota. Known for its wide selection of groceries and competitive pricing, Cub has become a staple for many residents in the region.
History[edit]
Cub was founded in 1968 by Charles and Jack Hooley, along with partners Robert Thueson and Culver Davis, Jr. The name "Cub" originally stood for "Consumers United for Buying," reflecting the founders' vision of providing quality products at affordable prices. The first store was opened in Stillwater, Minnesota, and it quickly gained popularity for its innovative approach to grocery retailing.

In the 1980s, Cub expanded rapidly, opening new locations across Minnesota and eventually branching out into other states. The chain was acquired by SuperValu Inc. in 1980, which helped fuel its growth and expansion.
Store Features[edit]
Cub stores are known for their wide aisles and extensive selection of products. They offer a variety of departments, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli, bakery, and pharmacy services. Many locations also feature a liquor store and a floral department.
Cub is committed to providing a convenient shopping experience, with many stores offering online shopping and delivery services. The chain also emphasizes community involvement, often participating in local events and supporting charitable causes.
Locations[edit]
Cub operates over 70 stores, primarily in Minnesota, with a few locations in Illinois. The stores are strategically located to serve both urban and suburban communities, making them accessible to a wide range of customers.

Corporate Structure[edit]
Cub is a subsidiary of United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI), which acquired SuperValu in 2018. Despite changes in ownership, Cub has maintained its brand identity and continues to operate under its original name.
Community Involvement[edit]
Cub is actively involved in the communities it serves. The company supports various local initiatives, including food drives, educational programs, and health and wellness events. Cub also partners with local farmers and suppliers to offer fresh, locally sourced products.
