Grocery Store

A Grocery Store (pronunciation: /ˈɡroʊsəri stɔːr/) is a retail establishment that primarily sells food. A grocer is a bulk seller of food. Grocery stores can be either physical shops or online stores.

Etymology

The term "grocery store" is a North American term and is not typically used in Britain. In the UK, shops that sell food are called supermarkets, while "grocery store" is, more often than not, used to refer to a smaller, local store where you can buy food and other items.

Related Terms

  • Supermarket: A large form of a grocery store. It is a self-service shop offering a wide variety of food, beverages and household products, organized into sections and shelves. It is larger and has a wider selection than earlier grocery stores, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box market.
  • Hypermarket: A superstore combining a supermarket and a department store. The result is an expansive retail facility carrying a wide range of products under one roof, including full groceries lines and general merchandise.
  • Convenience Store: A small store that stocks a range of everyday items such as groceries, snack foods, candy, toiletries, soft drinks, tobacco products, and newspapers.
  • Online Grocery Shopping: A method of buying groceries and other food items using a web-based shopping service. This can either be picked up with a short drive, sometimes even on the same day that the order was placed, or delivered right to the consumer's home.
  • Farmers' Market: A physical retail marketplace intended to sell foods directly by farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets may be indoors or outdoors and typically consist of booths, tables or stands where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and sometimes prepared foods and beverages.
