Maryland
Maryland is a U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis.
Geography
Maryland is defined by its abundant waterways and coastlines on the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Its largest city, Baltimore, has a long history as a major seaport. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, sits at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, home to the National Aquarium and Maryland Science Center.
History
Maryland was among the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. It was named after Henrietta Maria of France, the wife of Charles I of England.
Economy
Maryland's economy is influenced by its proximity to the nation's capital. It has a diverse economy with dominant sectors in the service, shipping, transportation, and manufacturing industries. The state's central role in American history is reflected in its hosting of some of the highest numbers of historic landmarks per capita.
Education
Maryland is home to several prestigious universities such as Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland.
Politics
Maryland is a Democratic stronghold, with the party holding substantial majorities in both houses of the state legislature and a long streak of Democratic governors.
