Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is a government ministry charged with health policy in India. It is also responsible for all government programs relating to family planning in India.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare consists of two departments: the Department of Health and Family Welfare, and the Department of Health Research. The Director General of Health Services is a technical advisor who helps in the implementation of various health and family welfare programs.
History
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was initially set up in 1947 as the Ministry of Health. In 1966, it was renamed as the Ministry of Health and Family Planning. The Ministry was given its current name in 1985.
Functions
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is responsible for implementing various health and family welfare programs and policies across the country. These include programs aimed at eradicating diseases such as Polio, Tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. The Ministry also oversees medical education in the country and regulates the standards of health care delivery through various institutions.
Departments
The Ministry consists of two departments:
- Department of Health and Family Welfare: This department is responsible for public health, including the prevention and control of major communicable diseases, as well as maternal and child health. It also oversees the central government hospitals and the Indian public health standards in the country.
- Department of Health Research: This department was set up in 2007 with the aim of promoting and coordinating the biomedical research in the country. It provides support to cutting-edge research in the field of medical and health research in various institutions across India.
