History[edit]

The University of Greifswald was established in 1456, making it one of the oldest universities in Germany. It was founded by Heinrich Rubenow, the then-mayor of Greifswald, with the support of the Duchy of Pomerania and the Pope. The university initially offered courses in the liberal arts, theology, law, and medicine.

During the Reformation, the university became a center for Protestant theology, influenced by figures such as Johannes Bugenhagen, a close associate of Martin Luther. The university's theological faculty played a significant role in the spread of Protestantism in Northern Europe.
