Ninhydrin is a chemical compound with the formula C_9H_6O_4. It is most widely recognized for its use in the detection of amino acids and proteins. Ninhydrin reacts with the amino acids and primary amines to produce a deep blue or purple color, known as Ruhemann's purple. This reaction is highly sensitive and is therefore utilized in various fields such as biochemistry, forensic science, and chromatography for the analysis of proteins and peptides.
