Meds & Food for Kids (MFK) is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing malnutrition and food insecurity in Haiti. Founded in 2003, MFK focuses on producing and distributing therapeutic foods to combat severe acute malnutrition in children.

Mission and Vision[edit]

MFK's mission is to save the lives of Haitian children and other vulnerable populations by developing, producing, and distributing highly nutritious foods. The organization envisions a world where all children have access to the nutrition they need to grow and thrive.

History[edit]

Meds & Food for Kids was founded by Dr. Patricia Wolff, a pediatrician from St. Louis, Missouri. Recognizing the dire need for nutritional interventions in Haiti, Dr. Wolff established MFK to produce Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) locally. The organization has since expanded its operations and continues to innovate in the field of nutrition.

Products[edit]

MFK produces several types of therapeutic foods, including:

  • Plumpy'Nut: A peanut-based RUTF used to treat severe acute malnutrition.
  • Medika Mamba: A locally produced RUTF that is culturally adapted for Haitian children.

These products are designed to provide essential nutrients and are distributed through clinics and hospitals across Haiti.

Impact[edit]

MFK has made significant strides in reducing malnutrition rates in Haiti. By producing therapeutic foods locally, MFK not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also supports the local economy by sourcing ingredients from Haitian farmers.

Challenges[edit]

Despite its successes, MFK faces challenges such as political instability, natural disasters, and economic constraints in Haiti. These factors can impact the production and distribution of therapeutic foods.

Future Goals[edit]

MFK aims to expand its reach and continue improving the nutritional status of children in Haiti. The organization is exploring new product lines and partnerships to enhance its impact.
